We are pleased to present Konstantina’s third solo exhibition at the gallery. Entitled Konstantina | Birrung Ngura – Belonging to Country, the exhibition will run from 4 June to 19 September 2026 (the gallery will be closed from 24 to 30 June).

Konstantina is a contemporary Aboriginal artist and a descendant of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, whose ancestral Country encompasses the area extending from what is now the Sydney Opera House to South Head and Watsons Bay. Through her work, she explores the deep connections that unite her people with Country, a fundamental concept in Aboriginal cultures that encompasses land, living beings, waterways, skies, stories, and knowledge passed down through generations.

The exhibition’s title, Birrung Ngura, evokes this sense of belonging to Country and the reciprocal relationship between communities and their environment. In her works, Konstantina reinterprets the pictorial traditions of her people through a contemporary and personal lens. She brings together cultural memory, historical research, and lived experience to share the stories of her people while exploring themes of identity, transmission, and resilience.

This new exhibition brings together several series of artworks that reflect the depth and richness of her exploration of Country, memory, and Aboriginal culture. It invites visitors to discover a contemporary and deeply personal approach to Country, expressed through the work of an artist who actively contributes to the transmission and ongoing evolution of contemporary Aboriginal art and knowledge.

To further explore the exhibition, we invite you to join an online videoconference on 9 July 2026 as part of the “Jeudis de l’art aborigène” series. Hosted by Stéphane Jacob-Langevin, this event will offer an opportunity to explore Konstantina’s artistic journey and the works presented in Birrung Ngura – Belonging to Country.

We look forward to welcoming you to this event and hope you enjoy discovering Konstantina’s artistic world.

INDIGENIUS.

PART I – Comprendre l’art aborigène contemporain

Publication of INDIGENIUS: A Landmark Reference Work on Contemporary Aboriginal Art

We are delighted to announce the publication of INDIGENIUS, written by our colleague Robyn Kelch, founder of the ARTKELCH gallery in Freiburg.

We are also proud to note that the gallery Arts d’Australie • Stéphane Jacob is mentioned in the book among the European actors committed to the promotion and recognition of contemporary Aboriginal art.

The result of four and a half years of research, writing, and design, this monumental volume of nearly 500 pages, featuring more than 500 color illustrations, already stands out as a major publication dedicated to contemporary Australian First Nations art.

Where Expertise Meets Design

At the intersection of encyclopedia and art book, INDIGENIUS is praised both for the depth of its content and for the quality of its design and aesthetics. Some readers already describe it as an “opus magnum” or even a “bible.”

Written in an accessible narrative style, the book is aimed at:

  • newcomers curious to discover contemporary Aboriginal art,
  • as well as art world professionals (museum directors, curators, art fair selection committees, and experienced collectors).

The objective is clear: to contribute to the recognition of Australian First Nations art as contemporary art in its own right, rather than as mere ethnographic production.

An Evolving International Context

In recent years, contemporary Aboriginal art has gained increasing international recognition. Major institutions such as the Fondation Cartier, Tate Modern, and the Albertina Museum have helped secure a lasting place for these artists within the global art canon.

Within this dynamic context, INDIGENIUS provides in-depth insight, grounded in more than twenty years of hands-on experience and dissemination in Europe.

Structure of the Book

PART I – Understanding Contemporary Aboriginal Art

This first section explores:

  • the spiritual, social, and political dimensions of this art,
  • its origins and dissemination,
  • its recognition as Fine Art,
  • its integration into the international art market.

The book places particular emphasis on the artistic regions of the Central Desert, Western Desert, and Arnhem Land (2007–2024), as well as the major role of the APY Lands.

Two emblematic art centres receive special attention:

  • Spinifex Arts Project
  • Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre

PART II – A Practical Guide

A genuine reference tool, this section offers:

  • a directory of Aboriginal art centres,
  • museums and galleries,
  • places where high-quality works with reliable provenance can be viewed, acquired, and celebrated.

In a market that is often poorly regulated, this part aims to raise awareness about issues of provenance, ethics, and the fair remuneration of artists.

PART III – Aboriginal Art in Germany and Europe

Finally, the author shares her personal experience as a gallerist, revealing the behind-the-scenes development of contemporary Aboriginal art in Germany and Europe over the past twenty years.

In a chapter entitled Confessions of a Gallery: Stories to Make You Cry and Laugh, she recounts anecdotes, successes, economic challenges, and market realities—offering a rare and valuable insight into the sector.

A Limited Edition

Due to German copyright law, INDIGENIUS is published as a non-commercial limited edition of 250 copies.

A special offer reserved for friends of ARTKELCH is available until the end of February:

  • €149
    • plus packaging and shipping costs
  • €175 total for shipping to France

This price covers only external costs (printing, design, image reproduction rights) and not the years of work devoted to the project.

From March 2026 onward, the price will increase to €250 (ex Freiburg) for the remaining copies available for pre-order.

Although written in German, INDIGENIUS is richly illustrated and structured in a way that also allows non-German-speaking readers to fully appreciate its content, particularly the statistics, visual studies, and graphic analyses.

Niah Juella McLeod – Doonooch Mabra: Owl Eyes is the first monographic catalogue dedicated to this contemporary Aboriginal Australian artist. Published on the occasion of her solo exhibition, it highlights a practice rooted in memory, cultural transmission, and the search for identity.

The daughter of poet, healer and activist Robert McLeod, founder of the Doonooch Dance Company, and of a mother of Western origin who was required to leave the community in accordance with tribal law, Niah inherits a profound artistic and political legacy. Her father, a defender of Aboriginal rights and guardian of cultural traditions, instilled in her the conviction that art is a vehicle for resistance and cultural renewal. Niah represents a generation of artists who move beyond traditional codes to assert a personal, committed and innovative form of expression.

Her works are distinguished by hypnotic patterns composed of fine lines or small acrylic dots, applied using a pipette, brush or echidna quill.

These forms evoke the natural world and ancestral stories, expressing a deep connection to her environment. Niah captures the power of the land by playing with light and texture, revealing the materiality of natural elements. Iridescent shades recall the mineral richness of the Australian soil, the warmth of sand, the chalk of cliffs, and the natural pigments used for millennia. The delicacy of the organic motifs and the softness of the contrasts invite contemplation and a reconnection with the land, perceived as alive and carrying memory and knowledge.

An Aboriginal Artwork Presented Aboard the Icebreaker L’Astrolabe: A Powerful Symbol of Franco-Australian Cooperation

On 6 November 2025, a ceremony filled with emotion and symbolism took place aboard the French polar icebreaker L’Astrolabe, in the presence of French and Australian representatives from the diplomatic, scientific and maritime communities.

On this occasion, Caroline Jackson, President of the Alliance Française of Hobart, presented Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Tutoy with a work by the Australian Aboriginal artist Konstantina, as a tribute to the enduring friendship between France and Australia.

This initiative, supported by the gallery Arts d’Australie • Stéphane Jacob and coordinated by Emmanuelle Crane, Citizen Reservist of the French Navy and President of the Indo-Pacific Institute, is part of ongoing cultural and maritime cooperation between the two nations.

A Meaningful Artwork

In a message read by Caroline Jackson, the artist, currently preparing her exhibition at the British Museum in London expressed the symbolic significance of her gesture:
“I am deeply honoured to have created this piece for the French icebreaker L’Astrolabe. It is a pleasure to see our two great nations: Australia, my homeland and the resting place of my ancestors for over 65,000 years, and France, my second home, brought together through this artistic tribute. This painting is my gift not only to this remarkable ship, but also to her crew and to all the researchers who, every day, deepen our understanding of the oceans.”

The artwork reflects the profound connection between peoples and the sea, while paying tribute to scientific research and maritime cooperation. It embodies the meeting of two cultures united by a common commitment: the preservation and understanding of the marine world.

An Exemplary Partnership Between Art, Science and Diplomacy

During the ceremony, Emmanuelle Crane also read a message from Admiral Laurent Bechler of the Navy’s Centre for Strategic Studies (CESM), who highlighted the importance of the gesture:
“It is symbolic to present this remarkable painting by the Aboriginal artist Konstantina to Captain Tutoy and his crew, for it embodies the lasting cooperation between France and Australia.”

This initiative forms part of the broader bilateral dialogue between the French Navy, the French Polar Institute Paul-Émile Victor (IPEV), the Government of Tasmania, and partner Australian institutions, in support of a deeper understanding of maritime and environmental issues in the Indo-Pacific region.

L’Astrolabe: A Symbol of Cooperation and Scientific Commitment

Operated by the French Navy on behalf of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF) and IPEV, the icebreaker L’Astrolabe provides logistical links between Hobart (Tasmania) and the French scientific station Dumont d’Urville in Antarctica. It stands as a testament to Franco-Australian cooperation in science, maritime operations and environmental diplomacy. The inclusion of an Aboriginal artwork aboard the vessel underscores the significance of cultural exchange in strengthening this friendship, and serves as a reminder that art, like the sea, remains a vital conduit for dialogue and mutual understanding.

Born in 1991 in New South Wales, Niah Juella McLeod is of Yuin heritage through her father and Anglo-Celtic lineage through her mother. This dual heritage, both intimate and powerful, infuses her work with a language of spirituality, memory, and healing—deeply rooted in Aboriginal tradition, yet unmistakably personal.

Each of McLeod’s paintings is a cartography of the soul, a silent song carried by the presence of the Barking Owl (Ninox)—her totem animal and spiritual guide. Dot work, circular motifs, and vibrating lines come together to create a meditative, organic world—a space for reconnection between the personal and the ancestral.

The exhibition "Doonooch Mabra – Owl Eyes " invites viewers into this singular universe, where the works become spaces of dialogue, healing, and transmission. It is a tribute to collective memory, Mother Earth, and forgotten voices, brought to life by an artist whose creative process is also a quiet form of resistance.

Niah employs a visual symbolic language, both codified and dynamic, which forms the foundation of her stylistic approach. Through this language, she conveys narratives that are at once personal and collective—imbuing each work with the resonance of land-based memory, spiritual heritage, and lived experience.

Aboriginal Art at Lyon Part-Dieu Station with the Musée des Confluences

From September 30 to October 21, 2025, Lyon Part-Dieu train station will host a special event: four Aboriginal artworks from the Musée des Confluences collections will be on display every Tuesday, right in the heart of the station.

A different artwork each week

For four weeks, one artwork will be presented every Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. While waiting for your train, you’ll be able to take a look — and even better, talk with museum guides who will be there to share the stories behind each piece.

It’s a great way to discover an art form that’s often unknown, full of meaning, symbols, and deep connections to land and ancestry.

What’s on display

  • Tuesday, September 30: A painting by Ross Karadada, Wandjina Rain Spirit (2002), showing the sacred rain spirits in Aboriginal culture.

  • Tuesday, October 7: A 2005 work by Pantjiya Nungurrayi, with circular shapes that represent women, hills, and desert dunes.
  • Tuesday, October 14: The Dream of the Flying Ants (1999) by Jack Ross Jakamarra, based on an ancient and well-known Aboriginal myth.
  • Tuesday, October 21: Goannas and Bones (1996) by Djambu Barra Barra, a piece about memory, life and death… and goannas.

A moment of discovery in the middle of the station

With this event, the Musée des Confluences is stepping outside its walls to meet people where they are — in a busy place like the train station. It’s a chance to pause for a moment, discover another culture, and maybe even feel inspired to visit the museum (you can get there directly with the C7 bus from the station).
