Fruit de 4 années et demie de recherche, d’écriture et de conception, cet ouvrage monumental de près de 500 pages et riche de plus de 500 illustrations couleur s’impose d’ores et déjà comme une publication majeure consacrée à l’art contemporain des Premières Nations australiennes.

Structure de l’ouvrage

PART I – Comprendre l’art aborigène contemporain

Cette première partie explore :

• les dimensions spirituelles, sociales et politiques de cet art,
• son origine et sa diffusion,
• sa reconnaissance comme Fine Art,
• son intégration dans le marché international.

L’ouvrage met particulièrement en lumière les régions artistiques du Désert central, du Désert occidental et d’Arnhem Land (2007–2024), ainsi que le rôle majeur des APY Lands.

Deux centres d’art emblématiques occupent une place privilégiée :

• Spinifex Arts Project
• Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka Centre

PART II – Guide pratique

Véritable outil de référence, cette section propose :

• un répertoire des centres d’art aborigènes,
• des musées et galeries,
• des lieux où voir, acquérir et célébrer des œuvres de qualité et de provenance fiable.

Dans un marché souvent peu régulé, cette partie vise à sensibiliser aux enjeux de provenance, d’éthique et de juste rémunération des artistes.

PART III – L’art aborigène en Allemagne et en Europe

Enfin, l’auteure partage son expérience personnelle de galeriste, dévoilant les coulisses du développement de l’art contemporain aborigène en Allemagne et en Europe au cours des vingt dernières années.

Dans un chapitre intitulé Confessions of a Gallery: Stories to Make You Cry and Laugh, elle livre anecdotes, succès, défis économiques et réalités du marché : un regard rare et précieux sur ce secteur.

En raison du droit d’auteur allemand, INDIGENIUS est publié en édition non commerciale limitée à 250 exemplaires.

Une offre spéciale réservée aux amis d’ARTKELCH est proposée jusqu’à fin février :

  • frais d’emballage et d’envoi en sus.
• Soit 175 € pour un envoi vers la France

Ce tarif couvre uniquement les coûts externes (impression, design, droits de reproduction des images) et non les années de travail consacrées au projet.

À partir de mars 2026, le prix passera à 250 € (départ Freiburg) pour les derniers exemplaires disponibles en précommande.

Publication of INDIGENIUS: A Landmark Reference Work on Contemporary Aboriginal Art

We are delighted to announce the publication of INDIGENIUS, written by our colleague Robyn Kelch, founder of the ARTKELCH gallery in Freiburg.

We are also proud to note that the gallery Arts d’Australie • Stéphane Jacob is mentioned in the book among the European actors committed to the promotion and recognition of contemporary Aboriginal art.

The result of four and a half years of research, writing, and design, this monumental volume of nearly 500 pages, featuring more than 500 color illustrations, already stands out as a major publication dedicated to contemporary Australian First Nations art.

At the intersection of encyclopedia and art book, INDIGENIUS is praised both for the depth of its content and for the quality of its design and aesthetics. Some readers already describe it as an “opus magnum” or even a “bible.”

The book places particular emphasis on the artistic regions of the Central Desert, Western Desert, and Arnhem Land (2007–2024), as well as the major role of the APY Lands.

PART II – A Practical Guide

A genuine reference tool, this section offers:

• a directory of Aboriginal art centres,
• museums and galleries,
• places where high-quality works with reliable provenance can be viewed, acquired, and celebrated.

In a market that is often poorly regulated, this part aims to raise awareness about issues of provenance, ethics, and the fair remuneration of artists.

PART III – Aboriginal Art in Germany and Europe

Finally, the author shares her personal experience as a gallerist, revealing the behind-the-scenes development of contemporary Aboriginal art in Germany and Europe over the past twenty years.

In a chapter entitled Confessions of a Gallery: Stories to Make You Cry and Laugh, she recounts anecdotes, successes, economic challenges, and market realities—offering a rare and valuable insight into the sector.

Due to German copyright law, INDIGENIUS is published as a non-commercial limited edition of 250 copies.

A special offer reserved for friends of ARTKELCH is available until the end of February:

• €149
  • plus packaging and shipping costs
• €175 total for shipping to France

This price covers only external costs (printing, design, image reproduction rights) and not the years of work devoted to the project.

From March 2026 onward, the price will increase to €250 (ex Freiburg) for the remaining copies available for pre-order.

Although written in German, INDIGENIUS is richly illustrated and structured in a way that also allows non-German-speaking readers to fully appreciate its content, particularly the statistics, visual studies, and graphic analyses.
